At first I didn’t think we needed another person chiming in on Mitt Romney’s latest stumble. His remarkably clueless comments dissing 47% of the country he wants to lead speak for themselves.

But when I thought more about this — and watched a different, shocking video last night — I felt I…

Thus we have done what Loki could not. We beat The Avengers.”  - Ira Glass

Some of you may have heard of the movie Sleepwalk With Me, based on a story Mike Birbiglia told on an episode of This American Life (that is going to be rebroadcast as this week’s show, check for your station at http://www.thisamericanlife.org/listen/stations).

The story is an absolute riot (it’s one of the first TALs I purchased, as opposed to listening to them free online), and I’ve heard the movie’s going to be even better. I’m going to see it in Minneapolis in mid-September.

Earlier in the month Joss Whedon (of Joss Whedon fame, also director of The Avengers, Firefly, and all the other fandoms. All of them) challenged Ira and Mike to show their film in more theatres than The Avengers. The YouTube video Whedon posted is a hoot (and a holler, too!), and worth a few minutes to watch.

Obviously, this is Chicago Public Radio we’re talking about here, not the behemoth that is Disney. It’s quite an uphill battle.

That said, Ira and Mike scored a major victory today, as the Opening Weekend of their film raised over $68,000, over $20,000 more than The Avengers’ average.

So, in conclusion, TAKE THAT JOSS WHEDON. :P

And in the immortal words of the movie Anchorman, “NO COMMERCIALS, NO MERCY!”

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs."
